Vikings is a collective term for various ethnic groups, which in the period from about 790-1070 AD were characterized by a large number of raids and conquests, mostly in Europe. The term can be traced back to the referred Vikings themselves. It was probably used both as a noun and a verb. "To go viking" thus refers to the raids that many men joined at the time and therefore became Vikings.
